The Roman Experience
A one day workshop focusing on the history of the Roman Invasion of Britain, why they came here, what they did when they got here and what they left us with.
Up to 60 children at a time
The day starts with a surprise invasion of the classroom - soldiers are immediately recruited, slaves will be taken and the classroom is plundered (hide your pencils and rubbers!)
All volunteers will be given a costume - we suggest that the children wear their P.E. kit as they will be changing in and out of costumes for playtime/lunch etc. After selecting an emperor for the day, we visit a slave market where the wealthy citizens of the classroom will have money to buy a slave of their own.
After playtime we spend some time looking at maps and pictures, and learning about who the Romans were and where they came from.
The children make thier own Roman coins to take home and keep, followed by a
Latin lesson - the Roman way.
Lunchtime leads into the Banquet, where
the children have an opportunity to sample
traditional Roman fare whilst listening to workfrom comtemporary playwrights and writers.
We use traditional story-telling methods to introduce the legend of Romulus and Remus.
The children are then encouraged to split into
groups and write their own plays, based on the
day's activities. These are then rehearsed and
performed to the rest of the class.
We finish with a summary of the day's activities and a Question and Answer Session.
