Anglo Saxon Workshops for Schools
The Anglo Saxons The invaders and settlers of the Dark Ages. This one day workshop explores why the Anglo Saxons came to Britain and where they came from. Chronology, archaeology and various historical sources are compared, and we re-create an Anglo Saxon village. We bring costumes for everyone!
Armour demonstration and Battle Drill - full participation expected!
Raids, invasions and settlements are discussed, with a focus on everyday life and religion.
The Sutton Hoo burial is re-enacted, complete with musicians, warriors and weeping women!
After Lunch the children experience the 'Dark Age Feast' - a chance to taste authentic Anglo Saxon food.
Traditional story-telling is used to introduce the importance of oral history.
We re-create an Anglo Saxon village, complete with metal workers, grain millers, spinning and weaving, crafts and traditional games. All of the children will make a piece of leather or metal jewellery to take home and keep.
Our Sutton Hoo model is excavated with the help of our experts - 'Professer Martin' and 'Doctor Robinson', and we discover what has happened to the burial site over 1300 years. A time line demonstrates how many years have passed since the original burial.
Finally, a visit to the 'Mini Museum' - and the 'History Detectives' game - original and reproduction artefacts to look at and discuss. This session can be used to promote follow-on projects within the classroom.
